A Moment with our EDTP Graduate- Meet Marlene Crosby

Posted on 8/21/2018 by EDTP Coordinator in LAEDA News

Marlene Crosby is the owner and operator of Marle’ Originals. She is a graduate of LAEDA’s Entrepreneurial Development Training Program. We had a chance to sit down with her to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA's training program.

(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I always wanted to work for myself and do the very thing that makes me happy! For me, that thing is sewing and making beautiful clothing, jewelry and accessories.

(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

The LAEDA program taught me how to properly price my items and also made me realize that in order to make it in a competitive industry, my products have to stand out! Why should someone buy my product as opposed to something else? What makes mine different?

(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

The most challenging thing is the fact that people like to copy your items if they see it selling. I try to make my things so unique that it would be hard to copy. I try to think outside of the box!

(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

One of the failures that I had to recognize is that placing items in stores on consignment did not work for me. Sometimes those relationships turn into a competition and that is the challenge that I faced. A person has to realize that they are their own best advocate! Who can sell your product or your services better than you? I may try it again in the future, but it has to be with a like-minded individual.

(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?

Today, I am part of The Vendors Boutique in Philadelphia where there are other vendors like myself who have different and unique skills. We are all under one roof and each has our own specialty.

(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?

My advise to any new entrepreneur is to keep in mind that if one thing fails, just push harder. Eventually you will find that “sweet spot” and realize that this is it!
