LAEDA's Individual Development Account Program - An Interview with our First Graduate, Mr. Hornsby

Through our partnership with United Way, LAEDA's Individual Development Account (IDA) program offers small business owners the opportunity to put aside savings for their business. Additionally, the IDA program is a Savings Match program. This means that for every $1 the owner saves, United Way contributes, or "matches" this with an additional $2. IDA program participants can save up to $1500 to which United Way adds $3000. This contribution is a grant; there is no interest nor any expectation to pay it back. At the end of one's saving period, the business owner has access to $4500 to invest in one's business. This video is LAEDA's interview with our first IDA program graduate, Mr. Rashaan Hornsby, founder and CEO of Health Nutz, a new enterprise providing a healthy snacking alternative to Camden residents on the go.

Minding My Own Business: COVID-19 Resources for Your Business

Camden, NJ- On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 LAEDA WBC along with the Southern NJ chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. hosted a resourceful event for COVID-19 resources for small businesses. The event titled, “Minding My Own Business: COVID-19 Resources for Your Business,” brought together people from different groups, different business industries and in different stages of their entrepreneurial journey for a discussion filled with information and resources to help entrepreneurs facing the everyday challenges of COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this workshop, sponsored by Wells Fargo, was to assist business owners with finding COVID-19 resources. Whether it’s the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Loan forgiveness or the upcoming Shuttered Venues Operators Grant (SVOG) the workshop offered more information about ways to manage business risk and crisis.

The event titled, There’s An App For That: How New Tech Can Work for Your Business! included several panelists including Gloria Pena from PNC Bank, Dylan Betrix from ADP and Justin Deng Accounting Professor from Rutgers University-Camden. The panelists and LAEDA’s Alumni of EDTP/WBA gathered for an evening of networking and to discuss the latest mobile applications that small business owners can use to manage and grow their business(es). Each panelist wanted to ensure that business owners have valuable resources from accounting and scheduling to content creation and payment processing in order to guide them on their entrepreneurial journey.

Welcoming LAEDA’s First Virtual Women’s Business Academy

On January 13th, 2021 LAEDA welcomed its first virtual Women’s Business Academy Training Program through the Women’s Business Center. LAEDA has been providing in-person training for over 30 years and launched its first virtual Entrepreneurial Development Training Program back in Spring of 2020. This first Women’s Business Academy is an important milestone and demonstrates LAEDA’s commitment to serving its community of Entrepreneurs.

Camden, NJ- On Thursday, January 14, 2021 LAEDA WBC hosted 2021 Tax Considerations for your Small Business with panelists Sheryl Paynter from U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Anthony Martinez and Carla Morrison from New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and Victor Garrido, enrolled agent, CPA and founder of GG CPA Services. The panelists gathered to discuss best practices for its views ready for small business as they approach tax season. Each representative wanted to ensure that business owners have accurate and complete records to show to the IRS without overpaying.
