A Moment with our EDTP Graduate- Susan Adams

Susan Adams is the owner and operator of Susan’s Daycare. Susan Adams is a graduate of LAEDA’s Entrepreneurial Development Training Program (EDTP). We had a chance to sit down with her to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA’s training program.

(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I had a lot of family that were entrepreneurs. However, I was inspired to do this particular business, by necessity. Being there for my children was a very important decision of mine. The rising costs of childcare coupled with my love for my children and it really moved me in this direction.

(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

I chose this industry because it was most conducive to being home with my children. Now that my children are older, I have the freedom to move from my house, to a larger location.

(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

The biggest challenge that confronts my business at this time, is finding a location that fits my vision.

(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

Thomas Edison is quoted as saying, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Success is taking those ways that do not work and using them as lessons learned.

(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?

The biggest takeaway that I had from this program was, that being an entrepreneur did not mean doing this by myself. Instead, I learned that plenty of programs and organizations were around to help me thrive. Many people were able to guide me on this journey.
My business is still currently in my home. However, my business partner and I are surveying different areas to start our business in a different location. Hopefully, we will be open for business by next year.

(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?

Independence is something people tend to strive for, especially women. However, it is extremely important to realize that you can be independent and receive help. Allowing people to help you through this endeavor allows you to make less misstep.
