The US Small Business Administration (SBA) Visits LAEDA WBC and Haddon Avenue

Camden, NJ- In celebration of Small Business Week, the LAEDA Women’s Business Center (WBC) hosted representatives from the US Small Business Administration (SBA), Congressman Kim’s office, NJEDA, NJ Business Action Center, Community First Fund and The Original Hot Dog Factory during a walking tour on one Camden’s commercial corridors.

As one of the only two women’s business centers commissioned by the SBA in New Jersey, its work has been tremendous in helping women-owned as well as minority-owned businesses in South Jersey. Over the past year, the LAEDA WBC has provided counseling to over 250 clients resulting in over $550,000 in capital access so most people are surprised that the center is only a three person operation. It would be safe to say that the tour participants, including SBA representatives, were overwhelmingly impressed with the work of the LAEDA WBC.

After initial networking at Curate Noir Camden, the group went on the tour through Haddon Avenue, one of the the bustling and vibrant commercial corridors of Camden, and spoke with business owners who have benefitted from LAEDA’s training and/ or counseling services. The business owners were able to share their experiences under the current economic climate, citing positive experiences with the WBC as well as discussing potential areas where local small businesses can receive more support. These opinions and suggestions were well received by all parties present, as they provide invaluable insight into the reality of small business owners in our communities. The feedback will form an important part of future strategy meetings to ensure that the WBC is able to tailor its services to the needs of the community.

The originally scheduled two hour visit turned into four hours, as the group lost themselves in not only discussions, but also the savory flavors of the various food businesses they visited. From Donkey’s cheesesteaks to Blowin Smoque’s BBQ and broccoli salad, the group experienced a lively morning that made every member eager to come again for the next tour. All in all, LAEDA’s WBC held a successful community and government engagement session that not only highlighted the real people that were positively influenced by the center but also the amount of progress the WBC has made in helping to revitalize the community through entrepreneurship training and counseling.
