1. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I’ve always known that I wanted to be in the food industry. As a child, I initially thought I would become a head chef, but as I gained more experience, I realized my passion went beyond cooking—it was about creating something of my own. I wanted the freedom to express my creativity on my own terms, which led me to explore catering. As my catering opportunities began to grow, I found myself facing competing priorities between my job and my business. After taking time to reflect and pray on it, I made the decision to choose myself and fully pursue entrepreneurship.

2. Why did you choose your industry?

I chose the food industry because of the role it played in my life growing up. My mom cooked all the time and our home was always filled with family, friends, and a sense of togetherness. Seeing how food brought people together and created meaningful moments made a lasting impression on me. I realized early on that I wanted to be at the center of those experiences, helping to bring people together through food.

3. Tell me about your experience while attending WBA. Major takeaways? “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help?

Overall, I had a great experience attending WBA. One of my biggest takeaways was how eye-opening the program was when it came to truly understanding what it takes to run a business. I already knew how to prepare and deliver great food, but I realized there was so much more involved—like maintaining proper records, managing administrative tasks, and operating efficiently. I learned practical strategies around marketing, cost management, and organization. The one-on-one interactions with peers and experts were especially valuable. Honestly, almost every week felt like an “ah-ha” moment because I was exploring areas of my business that I had never paid attention to before.

4. Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. Challenges? Successes? Failures?

My journey really took a turn in 2020 when my job shut down and I had to pivot quickly. I had already been planning a wing sale event, which turned out to be a huge success. The following week, I hosted a seafood event and received around 100 orders, which showed me the potential of my business. As demand grew, I connected with a financial advisor and officially established my LLC.

Over the past six years, I’m grateful that even though I haven’t always operated as efficiently as I could, I’ve still been able to keep my doors open and grow. I’ve gained both residential and commercial clients, expanded my reach, and even been invited back to Flavor Fest for a second time. Flavor Fest is Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence’s signature all-you-can-eat tasting event benefiting the organization.

Of course, there have been challenges—especially managing administrative tasks without a team. I’ve had to learn a lot on my own, which has led to long days. But because this is my passion, it’s been incredibly fulfilling. If I had to identify a failure, it would be not always tapping into available resources. I’ve learned that when I do seek support, things tend to fall into place much more smoothly.

5. Where is your business today?

Today, I’m focused on running my business more efficiently and continuing to grow strategically. I’m proud to be involved with local organizations and serve as a premier provider for community agencies, which aligns with my passion for giving back. I’ve built a strong customer base, with over 1,000 followers across platforms, repeat clients, and consistent referrals that continue to open new doors.

My sales have increased, especially as I’ve connected with more business to business (B2B) clientele. I currently operate out of a commercial kitchen and am actively working on taking my business to the next level. This includes expanding my creativity, building stronger connections, and branching out into new opportunities like hosting cooking classes.

6. Do you have advice for future or existing entrepreneurs?

My advice would be to surround yourself with accountability partners who will check in on you and help keep you aligned with your goals. For me, prayer has been an important part of my journey, so I always encourage seeking guidance and clarity in whatever way works for you.

I also believe it’s important to treat your business like a baby—give it consistent attention and care in every area. At the same time, don’t forget to reflect on how far you’ve come, because that perspective will help you keep moving forward. And most importantly, have fun with the process. Passion is what keeps everything going!
