T’Kemia Gibson-Daniels is the owner of Abkinah’s Islamic Boutique, which offers clothing, accessories, essentials goods, reading materials and more. We had a chance to sit down with her to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA’s training programs.
(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?
Giving back to the community and that is the heart of entrepreneurship in the eyes of my husband and I. We believe that entrepreneurship is not just about personal growth; it is about using our leadership to create a positive impact in the community. Therefore, our number one goal is to help the community thrive and make a difference together.
“Our mission is to empower others by fostering connections, revitalizing the community, and helping people recognize and leverage their own talents.”
Through events and networking opportunities, they are dedicated to creating a supportive environment where businesses can collaborate and grow together.
In business, it is not just about the products or services; it is about the people behind the business. “People are drawn to your business because of who you are.”
By cultivating relationships and building strong networks, they are helping businesses connect and creating a lasting impact on the community.
“When customers return to your business, it’s a clear sign that you’ve delivered a positive experience and met their needs the first time around.”
(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?
“We wanted to give back to the vibrant city of Camden, while staying connected to Philadelphia and Islamic City. Fashion has always been my passion—especially when it comes to dressing modestly yet stylishly. Why? Because fashion isn’t just about clothes; it’s about highlighting the beauty within an individual, showcasing their character, and giving them the freedom to express themselves with confidence.”
(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending WBA. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?
My experience with the Women’s Business Academy (WBA) program was truly eye-opening. It introduced me to a diverse group of people from various backgrounds and areas of business. This exposure was incredibly valuable, as I was able to see different perspectives and learn from others in ways I had not anticipated.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was understanding the importance of money management in business. I realized I needed to focus on the fundamentals—like identifying the right product to sell and understanding the best ways to market and sell it effectively.
Attending the orientation night was a game-changer. It really opened my eyes to the distinction between being self-employed and being a business owner. At the time, I considered myself self-employed, but I now understand the steps I need to take to transition into full business ownership. This clarity has been invaluable, as it helped me pinpoint exactly where I was in the business process and what areas I needed to work on.
The WBA program provided me with incredible tools—practical strategies and resources—that I can continue to use as I grow my business. It has been a transformative experience that has set me up for future success.
LAEDA’s program is truly an invaluable resource, offering a wealth of tools and strategies that have been essential to my business growth. It is like adding powerful, well-crafted tools to my business toolbox—tools that I can pull out and use at the right moment to solve problems, streamline processes, and elevate my business to new heights. From actionable financial strategies to marketing insights and business planning templates, every part of the program has equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to take my business further. The practical skills I have gained have allowed me to work toward an even more sustainable business for the future and add onto my success.
(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?
Our journey to starting our business began with my husband’s vision to open an Islamic store. We decided to work together on this dream, and after some time, we found the perfect location. From there, we took our time, working diligently every day without rushing the process. In March of 2023, we officially opened our doors, and by March 2025, we will be celebrating our two-year anniversary.
Along the way, we faced many challenges. One of the biggest was finding the right people to help with painting and fixing up the building. But we learned that challenges are a natural part of the process, and with patience, hard work, and time, they became rewarding experiences.
Our biggest successes came when we opened our doors and started building relationships. The connections we’ve made, the trust people place in us, and the conversations we’ve had with customers are our true successes. It’s a rewarding feeling to know that people believe in our mission and our business.
Of course, there are failures too—like those days when we didn’t make any money. But I see those moments as opportunities to reflect and grow. We ask ourselves, “What can we do differently?” Every failure is just a lesson in disguise, and it’s given us more opportunities to improve our business and make it even more successful.
(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?
As we approach our two-year anniversary this March 2025, our business is growing stronger each day. We’re introducing new products, expanding our offerings, and holding more events. We’ve also started to market ourselves more effectively, which has helped us reach a broader audience.
One of our exciting developments is that we’re now offering perfumes and making deliveries to local businesses in the area. Additionally, we’re working on acquiring a mobile bus to take our store on the road, expanding our reach even further. We’re also traveling to connect with new distributors to grow our network. We’re focused, always resetting, and continually relaunching to stay relevant and keep pushing forward.
(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?
My advice to future and current entrepreneurs is simple: if you have a dream or passion, go for it. It’s easy to have ideas but not know where to start. As more ideas come, there may be doubts or moments when you think, “I can’t do this.” But don’t let that stop you. Bet on yourself, stay consistent, and keep pushing forward.
Take the time to focus your energy and mindset. Enroll in courses like LAEDA’s to get into the entrepreneurial mindset and equip yourself with the knowledge to succeed. Most importantly, follow your passion—do what excites you, and stay committed to your goals. With determination and consistency, anything is possible.
