Nasheeda Pollard is the owner of Lactation Goddess LLC; a brand focused on helping new and expecting families unapologetically define their breastfeeding journey so they can feel confident in their abilities to lactate in a way that fits their lifestyle. We had a chance to sit down with her to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA’s training programs.
(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?
“While working at a nonprofit organization, I began to notice a recurring need among the families I supported—particularly those navigating breastfeeding challenges. Although I was able to assist with basic latching issues, I often encountered questions and concerns that extended beyond the scope of my role.
These experiences resonated deeply with me, especially as they mirrored many of the challenges I faced personally with my first child. It became clear that there was a significant gap in support and education for new families, and I felt compelled to do more. That realization inspired me to take the leap and create my own business—one that could offer the comprehensive care and guidance families truly needed.”
(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?
“I like to think that the lactation/breastfeeding industry chose me, I became a Certified Lactation Counselor because my job was offering training and my supervisor thought it would be great for me since I was the health educator, I could help teach others about breastfeeding. Once I started learning about it, I thought to myself, why didn’t I know this stuff when I was having breastfeeding challenges with my first. Over time it grew on me and I wanted to focus on helping breastfeeding families and nothing else. I took more courses and then became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) while on that journey I was introduced to breastfeeding children’s books. I got the idea to write a book that would help normalize breastfeeding. Each step of the journey led me further along the path and it just keeps going, I believe breastfeeding chose me.”
(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?
“My experience at EDTP was wonderful, I remember thinking that this was a great program because I did not take many business courses in college. This was perfect for me. The staff was always there and continues to help me even years after completing the program. I don’t know where I would be without the help of LAEDA. Running a business can be hard, the program was able to break down what I needed to know and having guest presenters that specialized in specific topics was very helpful. Knowing I can keep asking questions and getting support as an alumni has been reassuring and I’m truly grateful.”
(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?
“I had the mindset that I will learn what I need to start my business by finding free and paid resources that will help me get to where I need to go at each stage of the process. I was determined to make it work. Some of my biggest challenges were financially. Knowing that starting a business has a lot of up front cost and no profit for the first few years was enough to second guess if it was worth it. I was working a full time job, taking care of my children, and had no extra income but I was able to manage because of LAEDAs saving program.
I was able to self publish my breastfeeding children’s book Magical Milk and make a profit that would help me keep my business going while developing my skills for doing in-home lactation services.
Another big challenge for me even to this day is perfectionism, I’m starting to realize that it will never be perfect, there will always be things that can be changed. Instead, I focus on doing my best and learning in the process. I often will keep working on a product or service over and over because I want it to be good. This has caused me to take longer when developing products and services and then lose momentum because I don’t see progress.”
(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?
“Since launching Lactation Goddess, I’ve had the privilege of supporting numerous families on their breastfeeding journeys, providing compassionate care and guidance during such an important stage of life.
In addition to my consulting services, I’ve authored a children’s book that has sold over 9,000 copies internationally, including in the UK and Australia. The book is now also available in Spanish, expanding its reach to even more families and communities.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to be launching new products this year and remain open and optimistic about the opportunities the future holds for my business. I’m truly grateful for the journey so far and for all that’s to come.”
(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?
“My advice is to not give up, I believe we are all called by God to great things with our time on Earth. In life and in business we will go through challenges that will make you question your skills, talents, and even your worth. Do not let those thoughts keep you from what you were chosen to do. You will fail, you will make mistakes. It’s a part of growth and your journey. It will make for a great chapter in your book of life one day for someone else to learn from.”
