Get Started with the Entrepreneurial Development Training Program (EDTP)

Starting a business is a major undertaking and no one should try to do it alone.  LAEDA is here to help, think of us as your trusted adviser; someone you can count on for sound advice and to be there when you need help along the way.

EDTP will teach you the fundamentals of starting a business in an engaging and interactive manner, resulting in a complete business plan.

EDTP is a 9-week business training course designed to teach individuals how to start and/or operate a small business. The program is held two times per year in the Fall & Spring.  Applications are accepted year round. The course is FREE, but you must qualify.

Application Process:

     1. Complete registration form
     2. Complete phone intake call
     3. If approved, complete an interview with program staff via Google. Meet
     4. If invited to attend, accept your invitation

Schedule – EDTP is a 9-week course; totaling 75 hours of training. Classes are held 3 – 4 nights per week from 6pm – 8:30pm.

CURRICULUM

ATTEND THIS PROGRAM TO LEARN:

  • Business Planning

    7 units of business planning combined with one-on-one counseling, walk you through process of researching and writing a business plan.

  • Business Law

    2 units on the business law orient you on the effects the law has on the decisions you make when organizing and running your business.

  • Accounting

    4 units of accounting teach you the basics so you can understand how your business is doing financial and how to run it better.

  • Real Estate

    This unit teaches you the commercial leasing or purchasing process and when it makes financial sense to buy instead of rent.

  • Marketing

    4 units of marketing orient you on the science of marketing, how to use it to plan your products and promotion plan.

  • Personal & Professional Development

    3 units are dedicated to helping you grow as a person and build you to be the leader you need to be success in business.

  • Personnel

    This unit familiarizes you with your role as an employer, how to hire staff and what the government expects from you.

  • Insurance

    This unit explains the commercial insurance buying process, how to assess your coverage needs and how to understand your insurance policy.

  • Credit Management

    This unit will teach you about credit, how your FICO score is calculated and strategies to start fixing your credit.

  • Accessing Capital

    This unit reviews the lending process from the perspective of a banker and where you need to be to access the capital you need.

  • Leadership Development

    Transitioning from employee to employer?  This unit will help you identify your leadership style and to use it to grow your business.

  • Small Business Financing

    5 units are dedicated to teaching you hands on how to prepare for and apply for commercial loan, credit and its impact on borrowing and how to leverage banking to grow your business.

PREREQUISITES

THOSE WHO WISH TO APPLY SHOULD HAVE:

A viable business idea

Is your product or service in demand? Will you have to spend a lot of time and money educating consumers to buy?  Having a viable idea will get you on the road to success.

Capital & Collateral

Capital is essential for starting or expanding a business.  There is no such thing as a “no money down” startup.  Having collateral to support a loan is especially important.

Good Credit

Credit affects every aspect of starting and running a business, from accessing capital to insurance, rental rates, and supplier terms. A healthy credit score is critical for success.

Experience in the Industry

Starting a business can be risky, but having experience can help. We require applicants to have 2 to 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience in the industry they wish to enter.

Time needed to get started

Starting a business requires a significant time investment, including nights and weekends. Dedicating time for education and training can ensure success in your entrepreneurial journey.

Strong Support Network

Having strong support network is crucial when starting a business. You may need to spend time away from family and use shared resources. Their understanding and backing can make a difference in your success.
