Aesha Porterfield is the owner and grooming specialist of Phoenix Grooming Studio, which offers combines old school with new school by providing timeless haircuts with facials and aromatherapy, services that were traditionally only offered in a spa. She is also a graduate of LAEDA’s Women’s Business Academy. We had a chance to sit down with Aesha to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA WBC’s training program.

1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I originally became an entrepreneur because I left one job to take another that I thought would be better. Isoon learned, it was not better at all. I realized that a lot of the things I was unhappy with would only get fixed if I were able set the tone. Today, I know I have always had a lot of the attributes that entrepreneurs possess... I just did not realize they were special.

2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

As a child, I was always cutting my barbie doll's hair as well as doing the hair of my friends and family. I am a creative and cutting hair came very natural for me. I think the industry choose me rather than me choosing it!

3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP/ WBA. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

I learned so much during attending WBA. I had tons of experience in my field but needed the technical aspect of owning a business including bookkeeping, legal aspects, and marketing. The training and counseling through the program were the missing piece to the success pie!

4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

My road to business start-up was completely unorganized and I was always thought I could “figure it out as I go” . I was under-capitalized and had no real plan. Although I know better now, I would not change a thing. In doing so, I learned what I was really made of... I learned how to be resourceful.  I also developed a rock solid work ethic out of necessity and, ultimately, created the fire that is needed to keep pushing.

5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?
Today, my business is starting over. I am in the process of rebranding. I am taking all the lessons (good and bad) and forming a business that is fresh, new and exciting. A new look, new website, and new services are some of the things I am launching. I think the journey, personally and professionally, is what I am most excited about. The close of one chapter and the opportunity of beginning something new is something I am proud of and humbled by.

6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?

My answer to this question is short and sweet. JUST DON'T STOP! Self- doubt will happen. People will disappoint you. Your plan will not be perfect. You will want to quit... Again, again and again. That is exactly what is supposed to happen. KEEP GOING!
