Fatima Grant is the owner and operator of U.C. More Enterprises LLC. She is a graduate of LAEDA’s Entrepreneurial Development Training Program. We had a chance to sit down with her to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA's training program.

LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

Fatima: I am a Tax preparer and Consultant and I founded my business U.C. More Enterprises in 2006, as I continued working a full time job. After a few years, in 2016, I made my business an LLC, which helps in Tax preparation and credit counseling. I decided to become an entrepreneur because of my passion to serve people and my appreciation for sharing information to help people. My most cherished passion is giving others the tools and knowledge to succeed.

LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

Fatima: In a way, my industry chose me. When I was a teenager I taught myself how to do my own taxes. Afterward, I started helping my family members with taxes. Eventually, this turned into my friends also seeking my help in this area. Thus, I knew even though I was self taught that there was a lot more to learn so I decided to go to school to educate myself further.

LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

Fatima: The Entrepreneurial Development Training Program was a good experience; I completed it in 2007. The program was a really informative and valuable asset for me. I learned a lot about business planning and everything that I learned in the program still helps me today. My “Ah-ha” moment was learning what a business plan can do and the significant difference between starting a business with one and starting a business without one.

LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

Fatima: One of my biggest challenges was that when I graduated from LAEDA I opened a completely different business that what I studied.  I had learned to have a balance with your actual emotions while doing your business. When I failed to keep up in the beginning I realized that I was doing everything by myself and I did not have a support system and thus, no guidance. However, I still kept my passion and kept working on my business because I was motivated and did not quit. My drive for wanting to move forward no matter what challenge I came across or what failures I went through were my success.

LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?

Fatima: Currently, I am the only one operating my business. In the future, I am looking to expand to multiple locations and hire employees.

LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?

Fatima: The most important advice I would give for future or existing entrepreneurs is to persevere through challenges and failures because there will be a lot of no’s. No one succeeds without a lot of failures and failures come before success.
